Becoming a Person of Influence

Becoming a Person of Influence is a foundational text for anyone who aspires to grow as a leader. Written in tandem by Dr. John C. Maxwell and Jim Dornan, the book spells out ten fundamental qualities that define influencers. The authors carefully point out that a person’s influence does not develop overnight, but rather through a progression of four stages: modeling, motivating, mentoring, and multiplying. Influence can be acquired, but it only grows in increments. The good news is that no matter where you stand on the stairway of influence, there are learnable qualities to help you climb to the next step.

Project Leadership

Project Leadership Book cover

At the end of every project, two key questions are: “Was the project successful?” and “Do you want that Project Manager on your next important project?” With effective Project Leadership, the answer to both is “Absolutely, yes!” Project Leadership is the act of  influencing the team and the client to achieve Project Success.

Why is Project Success important? Various studies over the last few decades have shown that project failure rates range from 40% to as high as 70%. Given the massive body of knowledge in books, resources, and training dedicated to project management, why has the project success rate not improved over the last 30 years?

Project Managers can be so focused on tasks, schedules, and deliverables that they lose track of the team and client. But at the end of the day, it is the team that delivers the work and the client that determines success. Project Leaders thrive at this intersection of the team and client.

We propose that the formula for Project Success is:

Project Success = (Project Leadership Effectiveness) (Project Management Competency)

Since Project Management Competency is well addressed by most organizations, including Insight, and Project Managers themselves are typically passionate about their professionalism, our approach for improving Project Success is to focus on Project Leadership Effectiveness.

Methodology

Our delivery approach is a hybrid using the best from the worlds of traditional training and conventional consulting. A traditional training class would use a defined and strict curriculum and deliver all the content in 2-3 days. A conventional consulting engagement would be very expensive, long-term, and typically not focus on the individual project managers.  Our hybrid approach is:

  • Pre-Assessment
  • Custom Design
  • Delivery
  • Post-Assessment

The heart of the engagement is the 10-week delivery phase. During this time we use Action Learning, which is using the real-world projects that Project Managers are running as context for that week’s discussions. The additional one hour commitment for each PM involves self-directed preparation to make the most use of the group session.
The benefit of Mastermind groups and Action Learning is the level of immediacy, engagement, and relevance of the content to the real-life challenges that project managers face every day.

Project Leadership Framework

Our Framework identifies 13 Focus Areas that comprise Project Leadership. The Delivery portion of the program will be on the 10 most critical ones that are identified as a result of the Assessment.

  • Project Leadership
  • Project Success
  • Leadership Velocity and Agility
  • Project Leader Credibility
  • Team and Client Accountability
  • Developing and Managing Relationships
  • Establishing Trust
  • Influence
  • Execution and Impact
  • Overcoming Challenges
  • Innovation
  • Growing other Leaders
  • Managing Organizational Change Created by the Project
  • Your Leadership Legacy

New Manager Training

At the end of the day, no matter what your product or service is, it is the people in your organization that make everything work. And the most important person in your firm is your front line Supervisor/Manager. Why? Because your front line Manager is the one who is the “last” communicator, the “last” line of execution. No matter what vision setting has been done at the top, your front line Manager is the one who has to communicate and execute on that vision with the rank and file.  Your front line Manager does the hiring, firing, planning, training, monitoring and executing of all of your initiatives.  They are the ones who lead the team who directly touches your customers.

So why would you not invest into them?

Using one of the primers in the industry, “The First-Time Manager” by Loren Belker, Jim McCormick and Gary Topchik, a book in its 6th edition with over 200,000 copies sold, this program takes your front line Managers through a competency-building program focused on fundamental management skills.  Your managers will learn to lead their teams more effectively and achieve a higher level of results, consistently.  There are six parts to the book:

Part 1 – So you’re going to manage people

Part 2 – Tackling your new duties

Part 3 – Working with people, building relationships, and managing risks

Part 4 – Job descriptions, performance appraisals, and salary administration

Part 5 – Improving and developing yourself

Part 6 – The Complete Person

Success is: knowing your purpose in life; growing to your maximum potential; sowing the seeds that benefit others. It is a rather simple recipe yet requires awareness, study, practice and mentoring to achieve. There are Four Elements to Success:  Relationships, Equipping, Attitude, and Leadership.

In Relationships 101, John C. Maxwell reveals the secrets behind connecting with other people.  He points out the barriers to relationships, emphasizes the shared needs among people, and describes the ways to connect with others on many different levels.  Maxwell shows how relationships impact leadership, and how relationships help us reach our fullest potential.

Equipping 101

In Equipping 101, John C. Maxwell coaches you to identify and train potential influencers and to launch them into leadership. His insights will help you instill up-and-coming team members with the intangible leadership qualities they need to excel. In this book, you’ll learn to effectively delegate responsibility and lend authority to potential leaders. You’ll also discover best practices for monitoring their progress, supplying them with encouragement, and building their confidence as they mature as leaders.

Attitude 101

In Attitude 101, John C. Maxwell explores an intangible asset that makes all the difference in the life of a leader. He investigates how attitudes form, why they matter, and how they shape a leader’s future. From his insights, you will learn how to pinpoint problem thinking in yourself and others and how to promote a positive outlook on your team. As you read, you’ll also gain a healthier perspective on adversity and failure, and you’ll be challenged to reassess your definition of success.

Leadership 101

During a lifetime, even the shiest introvert influences ten thousand people. Your life is guaranteed to make a difference—the question is what kind of difference you will make? In Leadership 101, John C. Maxwell prepares you to make the most of the opportunities you have to impact others. Sharing wisdom learned from decades of studying and practicing leadership, he presents the bottom line of what it takes to lift up your leadership quotient.
